I was actually excited for this weeks housekeeping review. We recently acquired a good copy of Rolling Stones " Some Girls" which is currently on auction. (Click above album for link). I have always liked the Rolling Stones. Great rockers and their antics have kept us all entertained throughout the years. I have not listened to this album in years. Too many to count and I m not sure I want to. Where does the time go?
Fun fact about this album ; the "Girls" originally used on the inner sleeve were Lucille Ball, Farah Fawcett, Judy Garland, Raquel Welch and Marilyn Monroe. The estate of Judy Garland, (Liza Minelli) threatened a lawsuit and the sleeve was quickly changed. So I'm sure if you have that copy its worth something. Of course mine is not. Oh well, something to hunt for I guess.
I enjoyed this album. With songs such as Just my Imagination. Far away Eyes, Respectable, Beast of Burden and Shattered , this is the Stones of my teenagedom. I was 18 when this album came out. Another fun fact ; this was their best selling album. With that said I don't think it is my favorite. (notice my use of semi colons. not sure if I'm using them right but Its my blog so...)
With the growing popularity of Punk Rock and Disco, the Rolling Stones set out to shed their hard rocking skins and show us aging rockers could roll with the punches , or is that "Rock and Roll" with the punches. Honestly these subtle changes created a disjointed album. You know how some albums just seem to flow regardless of the pace of each song? Well this one doesn't. Not that the songs are not good they just don't flow. The attempt to update their music is too noticeable. However their ability to change has kept them in the fray for much longer than anyone else so there you go.
Being a 50 year old educated woman I would be remiss in not mentioning the intense Sexism and Racism of the song "Some Girls" . When called on this later Mick Jagger stated it was intended as parody. Personally I don't believe it .There is sexist undertones through the whole record. I do believe someone must have been having some woman problems. I dont know why but I find it acceptable. That's who Mick Jagger was . Is? It is interesting to me that the song "Some Girls" appalled me more now. I don't remember feeling that way at 18.
With all that said. I give the album a 4 out of 5 brooms for the fact that some of the songs were like comfort food. Songs that evoke memories of yesterday. It gets a housekeeping rating of a 4. I not only got my laundry folded but the floor was swept and I picked up the living room. Not quite perfect though .With the disjointedness (is that a word) I don't think I will use this album to clean house again. So there you go a total of 4 out of 5 brooms
you go girl! I enjoyed this review very much.
